One of Sakhi’s key programs—our work to respond to new requests for support from survivors of violence— has already had a busy year. You can review our data on the first quarter of the year below.
In summary, Sakhi received a total of 164 domestic violence-related calls and e-mails for the first three months of 2008.
As the figures demonstrate, Sakhi serves a wide range of South Asian communities from diverse areas.
Approximately 37% of those who contacted us were of Indian origin; 23% were of Bangladeshi origin; and about 11% were of Pakistani origin. The top geographic area for those who reached out to us was Queens, with 26.7% of contacts hailing from that area. Additionally, nearly a quarter of all new requests for support came from across the United States and more than 4% from South Asia, demonstrating Sakhi’s national and international reach.
