Internship Commitments

What is required of me as an intern?

Please note that on the most general level, our internships require:

  • 15 hours of work per week, including some evening and weekend hours.
  • A minimum of 3-months time commitment.

For a detailed description, please read the following list:

A List of Requirements & Guidelines for Internships
at Sakhi for South Asian Women

We expect Sakhi interns to be dedicated, open to learning, flexible, and eager. Though we are unable to provide compensation, Sakhi ensures that an internship with us will be enriching and productive. Sakhi can offer school credit if such a possibility exists. Sakhi is unable to provide a stipend for transportation and meals.

  • Interns are required to work a minimum of 15 hours a week, including some weekend and evening hours. These hours can be divided across several days;
  • Interns are asked to stay for a minimum of three months in order to have an impact with their project work;
  • Interns will document their project work with monthly reports, and are required to record their hours of work with Sakhi using timesheets;
  • Interns are required to take the Sakhi training if the training coincides with one’s internship. Attending other trainings in the field is also encouraged;
  • Interns may be asked to assist with Support Group and/or Economic Empowerment classes and especially with children’s activities;and,
  • Interns are asked to perform administrative duties and to assist with ensuring the successful day-to-day operations of the Sakhi office. Interns may be asked to supervise the telephones and e-mail traffic of their program area.

What if I want to get involved but I do not have the time availability for an internship?

If you do not have the time for an internship, another option includes volunteering with Sakhi, which requires a time commitment of about 6 - 10 hours per month. Additional ways to get involved with our work are found here.

We also encourage you to sign-on to Sakhi's Community Supporters E-mail Listserve to be informed of upcoming events such as our annual March Against Violence.
