Senior Domestic Violence Program Advocate
(Full Time Position Available)
Essential Job Functions
Direct Service Responsibilities
- Provide input for or completing statistical reports;
- Writing and submitting timely reports and other administrative requirements.
- Provide crisis response and safety planning for the organization’s helpline which responds to survivors of domestic violence;
- Conduct intakes and facilitate case coordination which may include information, referrals, and follow-up advocacy for mental health counseling, shelter, and legal matters;
- Assist survivors by helping them to complete reports, gather information, etc.;
- Participate in Sakhi’s annual volunteer training and orientations as needed;
- Offer responsive referrals to community members who call for other kinds of assistance
- Various other duties to be determine by Director and Executive Director
Program Development
- Manage Sakhi’s Legal Provider Network including recruitment, education, relationship-building, and follow-through;
- Develop ongoing referral relationships within the health, legal, and social service systems; and
- Assist other staff with cross-organizational efforts.
Additional Job Responsibilities:
- Assist the Director develop outcomes evaluation tools and processes;
- Supervise the activities of student interns and volunteers as needed;
- Assist in designing and conducting training/presentations and developing resources for staff and members of community from other agencies as needed;
- Oversee the development and maintenance of responsible safety plans, case-plans and required case records;
- Represent Sakhi at meetings with allies, partners, referral agencies and other external parties.
- Coordinate, facilitate/co-facilitate and oversee the content of support groups
- Develop protocols and documentation systems to ensure accurate and timely data collection for internal and external record-keeping;
- Assist with development and realization of various policy initiatives including our Faith-Based Initiative, Court Interpreter Program and Women’s Health Initiative.
- Knowledge and interest in policy advocacy that translates direct services work to larger movement building efforts.
Required skills:
- Sensitivity towards and understanding of victimization, especially the experience of survivors of domestic violence.
- Experience with the Family Court and Criminal Justice system preferred.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work under pressure.
- Must be able to work as a part of a team and independently.
Qualifications:
- MSW preferred.
- Fluency in one or more South Asian languages, especially Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi, and/or Urdu;
- Experience in direct work with survivors of domestic violence and/or South Asian women. Knowledge of the legal, court, and/or police systems preferred;
- Knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office and social service databases;
- Experience with community-based work and ability to engage with diverse communities and audiences;
- Strong administrative and organization skills;
- Ability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends;
- Ability to work well under pressure and juggle multiple time-sensitive tasks;
- An investment and background in women’s rights advocacy.

Community Outreach and Media Advocate (FT)
The Community Outreach and Media Advocate is the focal point of the organization’s community education campaigns and media advocacy efforts. In addition to community relations, community education, and community-building work, the Community Outreach and Media Advocate will be responsible for internal media production including production of program and events materials and maintaining the website. The Community Outreach and Media Advocate works closely with the entire Sakhi staff in order to ensure that Sakhi’s mission to end violence reaches the public and is furthered through clear and accurate communication, accessible information and community involvement.
The Community Outreach and Media Advocate’s major areas of work include:
- Community education efforts. This work includes coordinating Sakhi’s outreach events and presenting on Sakhi’s work for different community audiences: religious institutions, schools, universities, hospitals, community centers, etc. The Community Outreach and Media Advocate will be responsible for maintaining an outreach calendar, responding to presentation requests, and organizing staff, Board, and/or volunteers to speak knowledgeably on Sakhi’s work and goals. He/she will help to create and organize materials and Sakhi’s participation in community events such as the annual India and Pakistan Independence Day Parades. In addition, this position may include work in reference to policy initiatives or campaigns.
- Media work. Sakhi’s media work includes updating content, redesigning the Sakhi website and working on other graphic design projects for Sakhi, including the newsmagazine, Community Bol, and any other outreach tools needed for Sakhi’s program work. The newsmagazine duties include soliciting articles, maintaining production schedule, editing, and developing a layout on inDesign since production occurs in-house. Other outreach tools will involve brochures or materials for Sakhi’s program areas, an annual report documenting the organization’s work and financial information, and any relevant gala media products. In addition, part of the communications work will involve developing a communications plan and maintaining a coherent brand for Sakhi with input and direction from the board and staff. Furthermore, he/she will be responsible for coordinating the direction and/or production of Sakhi’s educational films or audiovisual materials. The media work involves developing materials that reflect the organization’s mission and scope with clarity, power, and integrity.
- Press work. The Community Outreach and Media Advocate will compile and send out Sakhi press releases, organize press conferences, maintain the media database, e-blast and other lists, press clipping files, and resource library, as well as act as a liaison between Sakhi and the media. Furthermore, he/she will be responsible for informing the general public, media, and volunteer base about fundraising events and outreach programs as well as assisting in the success of these programs and their coverage in media outlets.
- National networking and advocacy. The Community Outreach and Media Advocate will be responsible for sharing Sakhi’s work in national outlets as well as bringing back ideas from national and international women’s rights work as is feasible. The Community Outreach and Media Advocate may be part of various coalitions or task forces depending on Sakhi’s current workplan and priorities. In conjunction with the Executive Director and Direct Services Director, she is responsible for enabling Sakhi’s work to have an impact beyond the local context.
Qualifications
- At least two years of media and/or public relations-related work experience. A community activist and graphic design background is preferable.
- Experience with HTML and web and graphic design programs.
- Excellent public speaking skills and leadership qualities.
- Experience with community-based work and ability to engage with diverse communities and audiences.
- Experience working with multiple staff, volunteers, and program responsibilities.
- Fluency in English and one or more South Asian languages, especially Hindi, Urdu, and/or Bengali is preferred.
- Strong administrative and organization skills.
- Ability to travel and to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends.
- Ability to work well under pressure and juggle multiple time-sensitive tasks.
- An investment and background in women’s rights advocacy.

Economic Empowerment and Domestic Violence Program Advocate
(Full Time Position Available)
Position Responsibilities
The Economic Empowerment and Domestic Violence Program Advocate will be responsible for planning and executing a blend of Sakhi’s crisis response and financial access program work. Key to this work will be enabling survivor safety and self-sufficiency. The Economic Empowerment and Domestic Violence Program Advocate will provide helpline response, case management, and additional support to the Economic Empowerment Coordinator to implement Sakhi’s computer and financial literacy classes and workshops for survivors and referrals to job training and placement providers.
The Economic Empowerment and Domestic Violence Program Advocate’s major areas of work include:
Direct Service
- Provide crisis response and safety planning for the organization’s helpline which responds to survivors of domestic violence;
- Conduct intakes and facilitate case coordination which may include information, referrals, and follow-up advocacy for mental health counseling, shelter, and legal matters;
- Accompany and provide advocacy for survivors of violence in courts, welfare offices, hospitals, police precincts, public benefits offices, etc. as per need;
- Assist survivors by helping them to complete reports, gather information, etc.;
- Liaison with volunteers to provide support services as needed and participate in Sakhi’s annual volunteer training and orientations as needed; and,
- Offer responsive referrals to community members who call for other kinds of assistance.
Program Documentation and Development
- Ensure accurate and timely data collection for internal and external record-keeping;
- Chart outcomes and benchmarks for individual and program assessment; and,
- Document individual and program progress and produce reports based on this data.
Program Management
- Produce accurate reports and documentation of DV and EE program activities for organization’s database, grant reporting, website, and newsmagazine;
- Build and sustain relationships for possible partnerships and resource-sharing;
- Coordinate volunteers for DV & EE program activities; and,
- Ensure routine and comprehensive program evaluation.
Economic Empowerment Program Execution
- Enable financial literacy workshops, computer classes, and tax clinic and other programs;
- Research job placement, workforce development, and other opportunities;
- Implement job training workshops or facilitate one-on-one financial skill development for survivors as needed;
- Communicate and coordinate ongoing external EE activities to Sakhi constituents; and,
- Enable scholarships and educational advancement opportunities.
Qualifications
Candidates must have at least a minimum of 2 years of domestic violence and/or economic empowerment experience to be considered for this position. Further requested qualifications include:
- A Bachelor’s degree and relevant work experience in domestic violence advocacy.
- Significant and demonstrated success in a range of domestic violence and/or economic empowerment activities.
- Planning, management, and documentation skills. Demonstrable success working with comprehensive program execution and management.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and volunteer management skills. Ability to engage with diverse communities and audiences.
- Strong administrative, financial, writing, and organization skills. Knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office.
- Excellent public speaking skills and leadership qualities. Some experience with non-profit and community-based work preferred.
- Experience working with multiple staff, volunteers, and program responsibilities.
- Ability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends.
