Media Materials

Sakhi has a long relationship with the press – particularly the ethnic or community press. We believe that the press plays a vital role in providing information and provoking dialogue in our communities. We see the press as our allies in raising awareness about domestic violence and look for new, innovative, and mutually-constructive ways to work together.

In addition, Sakhi strives to provide our community with up-to-date information on our program activities. For example, in 2007 Sakhi continued its tradition of groundbreaking work with the following key achievements:

Direct Services: Sakhi responded to 727 new calls for support from January 1-December 31, 2007 while working with 50-60 survivors monthly on an ongoing basis. Of the new requests for assistance, 12% were from men. In addition, Sakhi held 10 support group sessions, 2 computer class series, 5 financial literacy workshops, 5 health workshops, and dispersed $11,359.34 in Swarna Fund grants to eleven survivors for educational pursuits. Furthermore, Sakhi leveraged $8,323.33 in external grants for survivors to support their journeys to safety and self-sufficiency.

Community Engagement and Media: Sakhi conducted 48 presentations in 2007. In addition, Sakhi disseminated materials and information via 23 poster presentations, tabling, and awareness events. Sakhi also produced “Transforming Societies,” a film on its work to end violence. Click here to view film.

Court Interpreters Project: The Justice Speaks Initiative surveyed 171 participants to show the deep need for legal and interpreting services in New York City. Click here to read more about the convenient sample results.

Faith-based Initiative: Sakhi held 2 focus groups with survivors in July and Sept. 2007 to collect data and information on their experiences in regards to religion and spirituality. To read more on the faith-based initiative, click here.
